What to Expect at Back-to-School Night

Back-to-School Night is coming up soon at our son's school and it will be the first one we've attended. Please let me know what we should expect and how to take the most away from this event. - Want Great Night

Answer: Don't miss this evening, as you'll learn so much about what is going to happen this year at your children's schools. This is not a night to bring your children to school, unless the school invites them.
The evening usually begins with a meeting in an all-purpose room or gymnasium for some general information about the school and its goals for the year. Typically, you will also hear a little about the school's parent-teacher organization and volunteer opportunities at the school.
Then you will be sent off to visit your children's classrooms to meet their teachers. In the classroom, be sure to sign the attendance sheet so the teacher will remember you as an involved parent interested in what your children are doing in school. Try to introduce yourself to the teacher, but refrain from any lengthy conversations or questions at this time, as there will usually be a long line of parents behind you waiting to introduce themselves as well. Teachers really appreciate it when parents are respectful of the time restrictions under which most school functions are held.
