Teaching Young Child to Read: Yes or No

When my first daughter was 4, I started to teach her to read. By kindergarten, she was really reading. Now my next daughter is 4 and is not nearly so interested in reading. Should I just start teaching her to read? -- An Avid Reader
Answer: You could start and see how it goes. Or you could go online to the "Get Ready to Read" Web site, www.getreadytoread.org and use the site's screening tool. It will show if your daughter's pre-reading skills are strong, weak or somewhere in between. It also has activities and resources to strengthen these skills to ensure reading success.
