The Right Books for an Early Reader

My little girl just loves books and is always pretending to read them. What kind of books should I be reading to her to keep this interest alive? -- Avid Reader
Answer: Predictable pattern books are an excellent choice for children, like your daughter. In these books -- such as "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" -- the same words or phrases are repeated over and over again. Pre-readers like these books because they feel that they are actually reading when they say familiar parts along with the reader. Then when they look at a book by themselves, they can say the now-familiar words using picture clues. Predictable pattern books are also great for beginning readers, as they give children confidence in their developing the ability to read. The children can easily read the repeated phrases.
