My child just started college and has no idea of what he would like to major in. When do most college students choose their major? -- Parent of College Student
Answer: Most students can successfully complete their entire freshman and sophomore years taking basic core classes without having to select a major. However, by the end of their sophomore year, they should have explored a sufficient number of classes to know where their interest lies.
Students need to be aware that the longer they go without declaring a major, the greater the risk that they will need more than four years to complete their degree. Even after they select a major, about 23 percent will change it once, and 15 percent will change it twice, according to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
A major does not lock students into a particular career. For example, Garth Brooks majored in advertising, and Jamie Lee Curtis majored in pre-law. Plus, most graduates change their careers two or three times in their lives.
