Keeping College Debt Low

What is the best way to keep your college student debt load low? -- High School Student
Answer: It is very difficult and totally overwhelming for students to graduate with fantastic degrees but have so much debt that it has a lifelong impact on their career and lifestyle. Here are some suggestions beyond searching for scholarships and grants.
High-school students need to find the best paying jobs during the summer and save this money. If it's a realistic option, they can even have a job during the school year. Plus, they should carefully look at work-study programs offered by the federal government and co-op programs offered by companies as a way to reduce expenses.
Graduating in four years saves money. High-school students should think about possible majors. The sooner they choose a major, the faster the path to graduation.
Students may also be able to reduce college time by taking AP or community college courses, which could give them college credit.
Students should visit the Web site of their state's higher education agency that is responsible for administering financial aid programs. They may discover that they can get state aid that does not need to be repaid if they choose such a career as teaching or nursing or being a National Guard enlistee. Students also need to investigate the options presented by the military, including ROTC, as a way to reduce their college expenses.
The choice of college is important. Attending a local college and living at home can reduce college costs. So can starting at a two-year community college and then transferring to a four-year school. Students also should look for lower-cost schools.
