On our summer vacation, we will be visiting a couple of college campuses along with our children - a sophomore in high school and an eighth-grader. We will only have a limited time for each visit. What should we try to see? - College Tour
Answer: The easy way to get the most information about a college and to get an idea of what it is like is to go on a tour put on by the school. You will see the main campus, library and possibly a dorm and classroom. One of the highlights is that the guides are typically students who just radiate enthusiasm about the school. Frequently, it is possible to ask them questions, which is great, as you will get the student's viewpoint.
Some of these tours also include information and question-and-answer sessions with admissions officers. You should call the admissions office before your visit to find out the times and dates when tours will be given and whether or not it is necessary to reserve a space. When you call, ask if it would be possible to attend a class, as it would give your children a great view of what college classes and work are like.
Do try to visit the colleges when school is in session during the summer in order to see students on the campus. And be sure to pick up a copy of the school newspaper and any admissions-office brochures describing the school and its admissions requirements. If your children fall in love with a school, it can really motivate them to do well in middle and high school.
