I am raising an attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder grandchild who is on Ritalin. He is 11, in the sixth grade and has always gone to Christian schools. I got a private tutor for him after I saw his recent grades were mostly F's. He refuses to do homework or forgets to hand it in if he does it. He made A's and B's last year at a different school. He has a counselor and a psychologist. Can you advise me? - Desperate
Answer: Use the counselor and psychologist in searching for answers for your grandchild, as these experts know him. Be sure to have them work with your grandson's tutor and classroom teacher. If the school your grandson is currently attending is receiving any federal dollars, your grandson is eligible to receive help from the local school district. This help could be in the form of testing or individual tutoring.
If the Christian school cannot offer your grandson the help he needs, you might wish to send him to a public school. If he meets certain special-education eligibility requirements, the public school would have to provide accommodations and/or special help to meet his needs.
