Adjusting to College

My daughter, who is a rather independent person, just went away to college. What are some tips that we can give her to help her adjust well? - Worried Parents
Answer: It's great that your daughter has been independent at home, for students like her are far more likely to adjust well to college, according to Maurice Elias, professor of psychology at Rutgers University. He also offers these tips for low-stress adjustment to college that you might want to pass on to your daughter:
-Get known by as many academic or resident advisers as possible, and find at least one you can trust and with whom you can communicate.
-Get help: College work is demanding, even for students who did well in high school. Check out tutoring and special learning centers for studying help.
-Get active: Joining clubs and organizations is a good way to make connections, but choose activities that best meet your interests and needs.
-Stay in touch: High-school friends can offer stability and support when things get rocky.
-Keep the lines of communication open, and let your parents know what is happening in your life. If you have a problem, tell them.
