Handling First Substitute Teaching Jobs

I am a brand-new substitute teacher - literally, as I just got hired yesterday! What advice or tips can you give me? I would welcome any help in handling the students who think they can get away with a lot since I am only a sub. Also, what suggestions can you give me in regard to how the teachers would like the class run in their absence? - First-Day Jitters
Answer: Try to talk to an experienced substitute teacher who will be able to give you some solid tips. Plus, go to a library or a bookstore and online to look for books on substitute teaching, because they will answer most of your questions.
Most regular classroom teachers will leave fairly detailed instructions on what they would like you to do. Always plan to arrive early so you have time to become familiar with a teacher's instructions and know where all the materials are located. Greet the students as they arrive. Then follow the teacher's instructions as closely as possible, as the students will be more likely to respond in a positive way. And do take the time before you leave to write the teacher a note about how the day went and leave your phone number in case the teacher has any questions.
