My daughter in middle school is having a difficult time communicating with her teachers when she does not understand the classroom material. She says that the teachers are far too busy to listen to her. I really think that she is afraid to talk to her teachers. How can I help her learn to communicate with them? -- Not Talking
Answer: The first thing that your daughter needs to learn is when her teachers have time to talk to students. If during a class the teacher says, "Any questions?" that is one time to ask for more explanation of material. Some teachers offer before- and after-school sessions to talk to students. If this is the case, she must take advantage of these opportunities.
Another thing that your daughter can do is write a note to the teacher saying that she needs help in understanding specific material and asking how she can get the help she needs. Also, many teachers have websites that let students email them with their concerns. These are easy ways for your child to communicate with her teachers.
If your child is having serious problems understanding the material in one or more classes, it is time for you to step in and contact these teachers.
