Answer: As the school year draws to a close, it is important for you to assess how well your children have done. In the early years of elementary school, it is very important for them to be working on grade level or above in reading and math. Later on, you should also be concerned about how they are handling language arts, social studies and science. Their report cards are good indicators of the progress they are making. If their grades are all A's and B's, they probably had a successful year. If not, it's time for a chat with their teachers. You want to find out now what needs to be done this summer to get them ready to start the next school year with stronger skills.
Ask their teachers to outline in detail what skills need to be improved. If there are many areas that need improving, find out what the most crucial ones are. Whether a only few or many skills need to be improved, discuss with their teachers what the best way or ways to do this are. Possibilities include summer school, learning centers, personal tutors, college remedial programs and your own home program. If you elect to work at home with them, try to borrow textbooks so that they can master what they didn't pick up the first time. Another possibility is borrowing next year's textbooks to give them a head start.
For your older children in middle school and high school, it is important that work be done during the summer in any classes where their grades were either D or F. If at all possible, these classes need to be retaken in the summer. Or serious work should be done in them with tutors or in learning centers. D grades are an indication of poor preparation for future classes in the same subject. And F grades obviously indicate a subject that simply wasn't mastered. At the high-school level, many courses must be passed for graduation.
