My son has a diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. He has an IEP, and that is supposed to address his problem in school. He also takes medication for his condition. He is in the fifth grade and is really struggling in math. He got an F on his last report card. What can I do to help him improve his math? Would individual tutoring help him? -- Help Needed
Answer: The Individual Education Plan for your son is obviously not working. It needs to be changed. Request a meeting at once of the IEP team to address your concerns. This team was supposed to develop a plan that would help your child succeed in the classroom. Find out if more testing should be done to pinpoint exactly what his problems in math are. Ask the team for a specific plan to improve these skills this summer. It could include tutoring. Your son needs to work on math this summer so he will be able to cope with sixth-grade math successfully. Also, you should address the role ADHD may be playing in his problems with math.
