Answer: The time that you and your daughter are spending learning the spelling words is not likely to produce dividends unless it is spent preparing in the same format as the school test. You are having her spell the words out loud to you. If the teacher did the same thing, your daughter would probably ace the test. We are assuming that your daughter is taking a written test, and this is where the problem lies.
In the future, say the spelling words and have your daughter write them down as she will be expected to do at school. Once your daughter has written all the words, look them over together very carefully. You are not only looking for spelling errors but handwriting errors that could make a word look like it was spelled incorrectly. This is especially true when children are just starting to use cursive handwriting. Make sure your child is making a clear distinction between letters like "i" and "e" or "t" and "l." Also, check that she is starting proper nouns with a capital letter.
After correcting the words, your daughter should write every word correctly that she missed. Then you can give her just those words again, and have her write correctly any that she missed. End the spelling session by giving her the whole list of words again and having her correct any misspelled words. Within a few weeks, you will learn how many nights it takes for your child to learn how to spell all the words correctly.
