A recent article struck a chord with me, as I have two sons who also hate reading. At least, they say that they hate reading. I wanted to share my solution, as it has met with much success in our house. Frankly, I am too busy to read to them every night. I work, go to school, volunteer with the Scouts and the PTO, and I am a divorced mom. What I have done is extend their bedtime.
If at all possible, my 8-year-old goes to bed at 8:30. My 10-year-old goes to bed at 9:00. The rule is: If they are in bed on time, then they may read for 30 minutes before lights are out. Reading is the only activity allowed during this "extra" time. If I come in and they are doing something else, then it's lights out immediately. They forfeit the privilege.
Since I started this policy, needless to say, they read almost every night, trying to stay up later. Sometimes they will even beg for a few more minutes, "until I finish this page/chapter, Mom!" The trick is to get them to bed on time and to provide lots of materials for them to read.
We got through the "Harry Potter" series this way, and as a reward, I took them to see the movie. It was a great opportunity for me to finally prove to them that the book is always better. - For Reading
Answer: Thanks for a good suggestion. Your children are on the road to becoming avid readers. Plus, the more they read, the better their reading skills will become.
