I want my children to be good readers. What is my role in helping them become readers? - An Avid Reader
Answer: At every age, the task of putting your children on the path to becoming good readers changes. Check to see if you are doing what is necessary to help them:
Preschool
The preschool years are important because you are helping your children acquire reading-readiness skills. You should be helping your preschoolers by:
-Having a daily reading time
-Engaging in many one-on-one conversations to increase their vocabulary
-Reading nursery rhymes and poems together
-Helping them begin to identify letters and understand that letters have sounds
-Encouraging them to identify some common words
Elementary School
In the first three grades, children acquire the mechanics of reading. You can help them develop the necessary skills by:
-Reading to your children every day
-Jumping immediately on any problem causing them difficulty in learning to read
-Listening to them read daily
-Talking with them about what they have read
-Playing word games with them
Middle School
At this level, most of your children's reading will now be concentrated on subject material. They need to know how to read for meaning. Help them by:
-Talking with them about what they are reading
-Reading to them, as it helps them learn more sophisticated vocabulary and concepts
-Working with them on any shaky skills
-Promoting reading beyond schoolwork
-Limiting their TV viewing time
