Fourth-Grader Dislikes New Teacher

Our fourth-grader has only been in school a few weeks, and it already looks like the year might be a disaster. Her teacher is having trouble controlling the class and assigns too much homework. Should I say something now, or expect the teacher to improve, as it is her first year? - Uncertain
Answer: Children can sometimes exaggerate. This might not be as big a problem as you think. To ease your mind, you should visit the class as soon as possible and assess the situation yourself. Pay close attention to whether or not learning is occurring.
You also need to carefully study the work your child is bringing home every day. Note the mix of assignments. While many will be routine exercises, some should require creative thinking. And do note the quality of your child's work. It will show whether or not she has mastered the material presented in class. Another important consideration is your child's enthusiasm for school. Good teachers generate interest in learning.
In fourth grade, children are typically assigned more homework than in the primary grades. A reasonable amount of homework at this level would not exceed 45 minutes a night. Unfortunately, teachers can seriously underestimate how long it takes children to complete an assignment.
If you truly believe that there are serious problems in this classroom along with excessive homework, you must express your concerns to the teacher. If you see no significant change after your discussion with the teacher, it is time to make an appointment with the principal. It would help if other parents who noticed the same problems accompanied you to this meeting. Hopefully, the administration will provide this beginning teacher with the assistance she needs. Many school corporations have established mentoring programs to help new teachers.
