What are some of the ways to get off to a good start in college both socially and academically? -- Bewildered Freshman
Answer: Get to know your classmates. In the first week, everyone is looking to make friends. Be friendly to everyone in your dorm and speak to them in class, at the gym or wherever you find yourselves together. You are most likely to form early friendships with the people on the same floor in your dorm.
Be sure to attend all orientation events. Not only will you learn about the school, you also will be meeting fellow freshmen in other dorms. And you will get lots of information about acceptable behavior on campus, personal safety and good courses for freshman. You will also learn what help is available should you have problems of any kind.
If you are attending a school with a large campus, walk around it to familiarize yourself with where things are. It is always wise to find out where your classes will be held before the first day of class. Otherwise, you may be rushing around searching madly for an English class that is being held in the science building.
No one will be telling you when to study at college. Plus, you may have so much free time that you put off studying until it's midterm time. If you don't have good time-management skills, make it a point to enroll in a study skills course or to get help from a study center.
