Starting Homeschooling

Since she entered middle school, our daughter has been having a hard time at school. She hates her school -- perhaps with some justification, since it has been identified as one of the poorest performing schools in our state. How do parents begin to homeschool their children? -- Anxious to Start
Answer: Parents begin homeschooling because they and their children want to homeschool. If parents aren't sold on the idea, it is not likely to work. And children need to want to be homeschooled.
Once you have decided on homeschooling, there is so much information on how to set up a program that it is staggering. An excellent online site is www.hslda.org (Home School Legal Defense Association). Plus, you might look at the books "Asking Questions, Finding Answers: A Parent's Journey Through Homeschooling" and"Homeschooling FAQs: 101 Questions Every Homeschooling Parent Should Ask."
Here are some of the basic steps that you need to take:
1. Find out what your state's laws on homeschooling are.
2. Find a local support group or homeschooler who can acquaint you with the basics of homeschooling.
3. Choose a curriculum.
4. Learn how to keep the necessary records.
5. Set up a schedule.
