Some Drawbacks to Looping

I want to point out that there are some serious academic drawbacks to looping that you did not mention in an earlier column. Children will learn more from some teachers and less from others. I would caution any parent in a looping situation to carefully monitor their children's progress in reading and math. The greatest variability in teacher quality appears to be in the teaching of math. - Cautious
Answer: Longer contact with a teacher can amplify the positives and negatives of looping (staying with the same teacher and classmates for two or more years). Fortunately, many schools have provisions to eliminate problems that might occur. They make looping voluntary for students, allow transfers at midyear for serious mismatches and permit opting out of a second year in a looped classroom.
