I am only 18 and having a hard time supporting myself and young daughter. I would like to better myself and start a well-paying career. I know I need to go back to school and get some more education beyond high school. However, I currently struggle to pay the cost of day care when I work. I just don’t see how I could manage the cost of school plus a sitter at night. Could you please give me some ideas on how I can get started on bettering myself? – Back to School
Answer: First of all, you obviously need counseling to explore realistic career possibilities for yourself. Talk to guidance counselors at local colleges, community colleges and accredited technical schools to find out what education is required for careers that appeal to you. Be sure to find out from these institutions what financial aid may be available to you from scholarships and state and federal financial aid. You also need to know if evening and weekend classes are available.
Here’s another possibility. Do you have a computer? If so, then you could possibly get the education you need through online courses. The problem is to find a program that is regionally, state or nationally accredited. Accreditation is very important.By taking one online course, you will find out if you are able to handle this approach to getting a college degree or skills for a new job. Again, you need to investigate what financial help is available.
Try to think creatively about how you can avoid the cost of a babysitter. Check school bulletin boards to see if you could exchange babysitting with another student. Do you have any family members or friends who might offer or exchange babysitting responsibilities with you?
