Problem with Being too Young in Class

My little girl is only 6 years old and is already in second grade. She has been crying in class because she cannot keep up with the rest of the students. I am wondering now if I made a mistake letting her start school so early. How should I fix this situation: Let her go back to first grade, or have her repeat second grade? - Possible Mistake
Answer: No child should be as unhappy as your daughter is in school. Something must be done. Before you can make any kind of decision, you definitely must find out exactly what your daughter's current skill level is and whether she is capable right now of handling the academic side of second grade.
Consider carefully the answers to these questions: How successful was your child in handling first grade academically, socially and emotionally near the end of last year? Were there signs of problems then? Is she having any good experiences in second grade? How does she get along with her classmates? Does her current teacher have any ideas about how to turn things around for your daughter?
Normally, we do not advocate retention, which is what putting your daughter back in first grade is. An intervention should be done by a team of teachers to determine how your daughter can best be helped. If she has skill deficits, they should be addressed now. Just putting her back a grade might not do this. On the other hand, if she simply is too young to keep up emotionally with her classmates, it could be a good idea to let her return to first grade if she wishes to do so.
