Preparing Young Children for Kindergarten

I wanted to add to your suggestions on things parents can do to prepare their young children for school. You mentioned that parents may be teaching too much phonics. I know that children like to know what sounds letters make. It’s fun. Of course, parents should not be using a lot of worksheets, but playing games with sounds in the car and at home is great.
And how about parents doing writing activities with their children before they go to school? Parents should research how the school wants the children to write their first names and then have them practice doing this. Most parents and day-care providers teach all capital letters, and it is very hard to break children of this habit.
Each year more and more students in my kindergarten classes do not have the background and vocabulary to succeed in school. We need parents’ support more than ever before! — Kindergarten Teacher
