My daughter did not make much progress in reading this year. First grade was a breeze for her because the teacher used a total phonics approach. This year the teacher was a whole-language advocate, so there was very little phonics instruction. I'm all for the phonics approach. What do you think? - Debating
Answer: There is no one best method of reading instruction for all children. No matter what the approach, most children do learn to read. Right now, most educators are endorsing the balanced approach, which combines whole language, with its emphasis on comprehension, and the teaching of phonics. Since your daughter responds well to the phonics approach, why don't you do some phonics work with her this summer?
