My 11-year-old grandson is having problems acquiring the information necessary to pass the Florida FCAT. He is currently in an hour-long remedial program after school (two days for reading and two days for math), but we're always looking for additional help for him. He seems to have a problem retaining information, so we want to help him resolve that issue. - Want to Help
Answer: The school is definitely trying to help your grandson pass the Florida tests. This is very positive. Have they also tried to discover why he is having so many problems? Knowing this could make it easier for him to grasp the material that will be on the test.
When children have problems retaining information, more review can be helpful. For example, if your grandson could review or even redo the material in the remedial program at home immediately after a study session and again a few days later, it should help him remember it. This includes rereading material from the remedial reading program. You should ask his teacher if he can bring copies of the remedial work home.
