I just wanted to remind you of another means of encouraging young readers. Have the youngster listen to the book on an audio tape while following along. Many bookstores as well as libraries have some tapes. If a child has a reading problem, this is one way around it. An additional aid that makes it easier to follow what is being read is using an index card under each line as it is read. - Reading Hints
Answer: Listening to audio tapes can definitely encourage children to read. Reading skills, however, will not improve unless the text is followed in a book. An even better way to improve reading skills in young readers is for parents to record small segments of a book or reader for the child to replay several times. Then the child can record the material or read it to the parent. Doing this several times a week can really help poor readers improve their skills. They learn to read at the correct pace and with expression. This method also helps them improve their sight vocabulary and comprehension.
