First Report Card of the Year

What should I look at on my child's first report card of the year? - Wondering

Answer:Get familiar with the type of report card used by your school district. Report cards may have changed since you have been in school. While some schools still have the traditional report card, others are using computerized cards or even summary sheets that describe students' work. Whatever the type, you need to read the card carefully, because it contains valuable information about how your child is doing in school.
Of course, you want to look at your children's grades in every subject. Do inspect all the other sections, too. Teacher comments can show how well things are really going in the classroom. Look at all those checkmarks and asterisks. They can give very important information about the level of your child's work, strengths and weaknesses in study skills, and behavior in the classroom. Negative marks can be a partial explanation of poor grades.
After a careful analysis of your children's report cards and before you sign your name, take the time to write down any questions or comments that you have for the teacher in the space provided on the card. And if the card indicates problems, schedule a conference with the teacher at once.
