Finding Material Children Can Read

How can I find the right reading material for my son who is in the second grade? Is there any special software that will let him answer questions after reading a book? - Curious
Answer: Your best source for appropriate reading material is the simplest - it's your son's teacher. Also, the school media center as well as the public library should have shelves of books that he can easily read. Without using reading formulas that require some simple calculations, you can easily determine whether your child can handle a book by himself or if he will need some help. Just have him read a few short passages of a book to you and see how well he can read the material.
Go online and use a search engine to find reading-comprehension questions for children. One site that you might wish to visit is: www.readingrockets.org/books/quiz.php. While it can be fun and motivational to answer questions online, the answers all too often just require a superficial knowledge of material and do not develop strong comprehension skills. When you read with your son, ask him questions about his thoughts on story characters, the plot, what is going to happen next and the sequence of events. This will help him develop more sophisticated comprehension skills.
