My son just finished three years of preschool and kindergarten at a Montessori school. Next year, he will be attending first grade. As you probably can guess, I am on the "hunt" for his next school.
I've looked into many Christian schools since we are devout believers. While they would definitely nurture his spiritual needs, I wonder if they'd meet his educational needs. He is a bit advanced for his age.
Our town has recently been approved for a K-5 charter school this fall. The public system is not one that I would like to embrace, even though our taxes are astronomical. How should I choose a kindergarten for him? The charter school would be free, the Christian school costs $8,000 and the Montessori costs $15,000. -- Need to Make a Decision
Answer: Before making any decision about which school your son should attend, you need to find out as much as you can about each of these schools: What is a school's philosophy of learning? What is the first-grade curriculum like? Fortunately, you should already be acquainted with the Montessori program. And you can easily learn more about how it works in grades 1-5 by talking to parents of children in these grades. You will need to visit or get material from the charter and Christian schools to learn more about them. This can be more difficult to do in the summer.
Once you are well acquainted with what each school is like, think about how your son is likely to do in each environment. The one that overall best matches his needs and works well with your family's finances and religious beliefs is likely the best choice. No one school is likely to meet all of what you are looking for.
You must remember that this is not a one-year decision. You are deciding where you want your child to attend elementary school.
