I just received my scores on the SAT. I think that I could have done better by preparing more. I'll be a senior in the fall. Should I consider retaking the test then? - Disappointed
Answer: It's not just test scores that play such a big role in the college-admissions process. It's the overall strength of your application. Colleges are finding that there is considerable grade inflation at the present time so solid test scores can validate the strength of your grade-point average.
Most students who retake the SAT do improve their test scores. Part of the reason is that they might not have prepared as much as they should have for the initial test. Once students have taken the test, they also know their weaknesses and are more prepared to make a greater effort to improve them.
Most high-school students are now taking the SAT in the spring of their junior year and again in the fall of their senior year, if necessary. There is very little downside to taking the SAT more than once, as most colleges consider the best scores of the two test sessions.
