What is the best way to thank my children’s teachers this holiday season. I have a preschooler and a third-grader. — Gift Giver
Answer: Before deciding what to give your children’s teachers, find out what your school’s policy is on gift giving. Some school districts have policies strongly discouraging gift giving to teachers at any time. Plus, others have set dollar limits on how much parents can spend.
While gift giving is definitely something that is optional, your children are likely to be upset if most of the other children are giving gifts and they aren’t. Gifts do not have to be extravagant. Your children can make a gift or write a thank-you note. Incidentally, teachers also appreciate thank-you notes from parents.
You must remember that most teachers appreciate gifts but definitely do not believe they are necessary. At some schools, parents may join together to give a class gift. The parents contribute what they wish within certain limits. Or they might simply join together to make an album of classroom activities or give the teacher coupons that can be redeemed for volunteer hours.
