With all the talk about a need for more money to give our children a better education, I ask: Does more spending on education lead to better student performance? – Seeking an Answer
Answer: State Budget Solutions (a nonprofit organization advocating for fundamental reform of state budgets) found that from 2009-2011, the states that spent the most money on education as a percentage of total spending did not produce students with better ACT scores or graduation rates. According to Bob Williams, president of State Budget Solutions, spending money isn’t going to achieve the results that taxpayers are funding and parents are wanting.
There are states, however, in which students have high ACT scores and graduation rates. Williams says: Educators and elected officials need to look at what these states are doing. In general, they are taking a more active role in educational outcomes. This means developing flexible, practical education plans tailored to state or prioritizing school district transparency to minimize waste and fraud.
