My kids love to play in the garden. I would like to teach them more about plants. Do you have any suggestions? -- Plant Lover
Answer: Try these following experiments that deal with plant biology.
Experiment No. 1: This week your children will see how water gets from the roots of plants to all the other parts of the plant. The process is called capillary action. Your children can use three white carnations or celery stalks with leaves. They also need three tall, clear glasses of water and red, yellow and blue food coloring. Mix one color into each of the glasses. The color should be strong. The children should place the stem of a flower or celery stalk in each glass. The plants should then be placed outside in the sunlight. Within a day or more, they will see that the color has traveled up the stems of the plants.
Experiment No. 2: Your children can expand on the above experiment by having you split the stem of a flower. Then one half of the stem can be placed in one color of water and the other in a different color. Your children will be surprised to see that the flower will have both colors.
