Phonics and Older Students

How do you teach phonics to a child in the 10th grade? Are there any books? My daughter had phonics taught to her in preschool, but when she went to public school, they taught word recognition instead.
She is an A student, but her reading is terrible, even though it has improved in the past couple of years. She has dreams of going to a top school, but I fear that her reading will hold her back. Any suggestions? - Eager to Help
Answer: A lack of phonics is not apt to be the problem of a poor reader who is getting A's in high school. Your daughter's reading skills are not likely to improve until the cause of her problem is discovered and a plan to overcome the problem is made. The reading teacher at her high school should be able to do this. Have your daughter ask her guidance counselor to arrange for the necessary testing. In the meantime, encourage your child to keep reading as much as possible, for it will improve her skills.
