What are a few of the reasons school districts choose to have separate classes or schools for boys and girls? -- Puzzled
Answer: Having separate classrooms or schools for boys and girls is definitely not a new idea, as it has been around since George Washington's time for private schools. Recently, some studies have shown that standardized test scores did improve when students were separated by sex. In addition, there is the belief that both boys and girls can focus more on their work.
Boys tend to take leadership positions in schools with both sexes. In same-sex schools, girls have the opportunity to speak out more in classrooms and hold all the school leadership positions. Interestingly, a very high percentage of women in Congress and on Fortune 500 boards went to all-women colleges.
There are, of course, many who oppose same-sex classrooms or schools. Their major point is that children attending these schools will not have the opportunity to learn how to interact with the opposite sex. They also point out that separate schools are a form of gender discrimination.
