Child Continues to Fail in High School

My son is 16 years old and still in ninth grade. Last year, he failed ninth grade, and it looks like he will fail again this year. Nothing seems to work for him. Could you tell me how I can help him? - Desperate
Answer: Get an appointment tomorrow with your son's guidance counselor. The boy should attend this meeting, and his input should be carefully considered. First of all, determine what the problem is. Is it academics, attendance or something else? Look also for successful areas to build on. Without considerable help from the school starting now, your son is likely to become discouraged and drop out.
A traditional high school might not be the right place for your child. Find out what alternatives your school district or the county can offer. A continuation school or vocational program might be a good choice.
