Becoming Involved in Children's Schools

Beyond attending school functions and joining the parent-teacher organization, what are some things that I can do to involve myself in my children's schools? - Very Busy Parent
Answer: Schools are now providing far more opportunities for parents to get involved. No matter what you decide to do, you will have a much better idea of what is happening at your children's schools. Here are some things you might want to do:
-Volunteer to serve as a tutor, work in the cafeteria or office, or supervise on the playground. Schools never have enough adult help.
-If you are a computer guru, seamstress, artist or calligrapher, or have expertise in a particular field, your talents might be needed for such things as computer installation and programming, school productions and newsletters.
-Serve as a leader of a classroom activity, from describing a trip to China to sharing what it is like to be an accountant.
-Work from your home by taking part in a telephone tree to contact other parents or by making educational tools for teachers, including posters, flash cards or games. Teachers never have sufficient time in the day to make all the educational aids that they would like to use in their classrooms.
-Take part in groups studying and making decisions on issues ranging from the adoption of school uniforms to changes in the curriculum. This will definitely let you influence what is happening at your children's schools.
